From Script To Screen: Final Storyboard
Like before the act will begin with the curtains opening and the sudden explosion of smoke. The magician will be reveal clutching his briefcase. He will put the briefcase down and begin to take out a dove behind his cape. As this is happening the camera will pan around him. He will throw the dove into the sky and the camera will follow. This shows the audience (real) what sort of environment they are in. The camera will pan back around to reveal the magician taking something out of his briefcase. It will be a large table which wouldn't actually fit in the case of that size. He will begin moving it around in the air as if its levitating. He will then begin to spin and eventually drop the table while continuing to float in the air.
The camera is going to pan around and reveal his assistant. I like the idea that she appears suddenly. He expects her to be there even though she really isn't, through the many time the two have completed the act together. I changed it so instead of the magician disappearing it is his assistant to give her more importance to the routine. I purposefully chose a large object such as a wardrobe appearing suddenly to continue the narrative that everything is happening in his head. The audience (real) however will just accept it however as it is a magic act. It is also an animation so people are much more forgiving with inconstancy. When consuming media humans have the ability to suspend their disbelief, allowing them to believe the impossible.
When his assistant gets in the wardrobe and disappears it hints at the fact that she is no longer there, something the magician deep down knows but cant accept. This shows reality slowly seeping in and it is at this point that the world will truly begin to alter. The magician taps the wardrobe and opens it to reveal his assistant is missing. I want to show the panic of this realisation on the magicians face, this is when you begin to see his sickly institute side. This show that he is not ready to let her go. While this is happening the music could turn strange and the clapping could go out of sink as he is no longer paying attention to this strange world he's created. This is when the magicians hat suddenly gets stolen, snapping him out of his trance. The person who stole his hat is his assistant who appears behind him. The audience (real) will assume that this is just part of the act, however he will be relieved to see her return. The fact that she grabs his hat in a playful way also tells us what sort of relationship they have.
When the magician snatches the hat back he's going to transition it to pulling a rabbit out of it. This shows that this is the reality that he wants to accept and immediately goes back to his routine. While this is happening however his assistant is ready for the next trick where she will be escaping a locked tank of water. This is the trick which went wrong and resulted in her life ending, the whole reason the magician is stuck in the institute in the first place. While still distracted by the rabbit and audience he does not notice her leaving and his concentration is only broken when he hears the closing of the door. He will once again turn pale and begin transitioning to his institute self as he runs over to the tank. At this point the music will be going crazy and the screams coming from the institute (the real world) will begin seeping in. The magician will be desperately trying to get his assistant out, who's face will slowly turn more menacing as if taunting him. This is due to the guilt the magician feels. He will begin hitting the glass to try to get it to crack.
The magician will suddenly fall to the ground and his vision will begin to blur. Standing above him will be his healthy old self, grinning back. The magician will blink and this will transition into a doctor. In the doctors hand is a syringe, revealing that the magician has been drugged to put him to sleep. The camera will now show a full shot of his surroundings. As the screams from the institute get louder, you will see the crazed people the magician has been performing to. The camera will zoom in to the open briefcase on the floor which contains a picture of the magicians wife (the assistant) and a newspaper clipping with the title "Magic Act Goes Terribly Wrong". There is then a shot of the outside of the hospital with the clear sign stating its a mental institute.
This is the final storyboard depicting the text above. It is read left to right.
