Today I made the improvements on the Samurai character, changing the characters shoulders, armour, glove and shoes.
After learning that not everything has to be done in the modelling faze, I added more depth to the characters armour, giving it a more varied look. This took reference from the samurai character models I found online and implemented the parts I liked to my design. Not only does this now look more interesting, I now understand how the armour fits together in a logical way. This is essential for the modelling process as you want your models to make sense and fit together. I will also be able to create a better model with a greater depth, having more layers which were added for a purpose to aid in the Samurai's combat.
I really like the tip added to the armour shield which prevents swords from slicing off the wearers head if the opponent slides their sword upwards. I really want to show this off in the animation and may go back and add additional frames to my animatic showing this off.
I tried to keep the colour pallet the same, yet still show off the extra layers the character is wearing. I moved the shoulder armour to the side where it will actually be when I model the character. I also covered the characters feet in order to lighten the load of what needs to be rigged. I moved the characters leg and back outwards to make it more anatomically correct, as seen from the torso reference model found online.

Overall I am happy with the improvements I have made to the character. Initially I was hesitant to make the changes as I thought the drawings were detailed enough to give me a basic understanding of what to model. I could then make changes once I saw the character in 3D. However now that I have made the changes I now see all things which were wrong with my original design, particularly the shoulders. The character now looks a lot tougher as if he is able to put up a decent fight and just generally looks more correct in his posture. I am also happy with the changes to the armour as I now understand how I want everything to fit together, allowing me to assemble it correctly in the model.
Below is the original drawing of my character for reference as well as the rough drawings of the improved character. It took me a while to find the shape I was looking for, below shows my experimenting with different looks.
