Major Project: Experimenting For Environment
Today I found different tutorials online which are relevant to creating my environment in 3D. I started by firstly reviewing what the environment looked like in my drawings and then how this was depicted in the Pre-viz, this helped me to identify the important details which were missing. The main things contained within my environment are:
- Mountains
- Stones
- Grass
- Trees
- Rope Bridge
- Japanese Palace
- Background Skyscrapers
- Lanterns
- Bridge
- Shinto Shrine
- Starry Night Skydome
Overall the environment is not too detailed as my project focuses on characters, however I still want it to look good. I feel the main part I want to focus on to achieve the look of my environment in 3D is through lighting and rendering effect, which I will investigate at a later date.
I then searched for tutorials online to investigate how I could create these features in 3D.
Below is a video tutorial which depicts making grass in Maya through MASH. I will use this on the traditional Japanese environment to highlight its on the side of nature. By using Mash you are able to completely customize how the grass covers the environment while also not taking up as much rendering power.
I found this tutorial which goes through the process of making a basic tree in Maya and then exporting it to Substance painter and adding in additional detail. I already have a basic tree and want to use what is learnt from this video to enhance it for the final model. I originally planned on having more trees in the environment, however was afraid to do so as they seem hard to model and didn't want to waste time doing so if my main focus is the characters. However this tutorial seemed to simplify the process of making trees and I hope to add more to my environment to emphasis nature as that is what the environment is meant to represent in the animation.
I found a video online which shows how to make a bridge in Maya with actual physics. This is important for the animation when the Samurai slices the bridge in order to prevent the Cyberpunk character from reaching the other side. I don't have too much experience with making object which dynamically move based on the environment in Maya and so this tutorial will help me to understand how this is done.
I will look at the lighting and rendering at a later date, however I liked how this video explained its sky dome and want to implement a more interesting sky dome into my own animation, rather than just having a blank sky.
In terms of the Shinto Shrine and Bridge, I think I can get away with using the previz model and simply enhancing them through textures in substance. The same goes for the background skyscrapers. I would like to experiment in Substance to make them look more interesting, however they are meant to be a abstract shapes so the models themselves are intentionally non-detailed to show the contrast between the two worlds. I want to focus on the building more in the lighting and rendering section of the project. As for the Japanese Palace and lanterns, I would like to remodel both however this will be based upon my drawings so no video tutorial is needed.
