Intro To Photoshop: Editing Photos

Todays lesson focused mainly on the different types of selection tools in photoshop. Before starting the task we went through all of the different types of selection tools to see how they all varied and what they are best used for. Selection tools are really good for isolating a certain part of an image to edit or deleted separately to the whole image. Once you are done with a selection you can click ctrl + D to deselect the object in the image.

With first image the goal was to select the dress only, so that we could create a clipping mask and change the colour of it. This is used a lot in the fashion industry to show different coloured versions of the same product quickly. We firstly use the quick selection tool to roughly select as much of the dress as we could. It did not matter if you slightly went over or under the line as this would be fixed after. With the selection tool still selected, you click on select and mask on the top of the screen. This isolates the selected image, represented by the red, allowing you to then use the paintbrush tool to draw in or erase any edges on the image. Once the image has been cleared up you then go to the adjustment menu in the layers panel and select colour balance. This then allows you to change the colour of the dress instead of the whole image.

To practise using this tool when then completed a second image.

The first image was intended  to show the forest path in the doorway of the second image, without damaging both the images. To do this we created a mask layer on the door image,  found in the layers panel next to the image adjustment tool. Masks work in black and white, meaning anything drawn with a black brush will be see through and anything drawn with white will be solid. You can change the brush's opacity and type to get different results. I then also changed the colour of the woman's dress using the previous method.

The final task was intended to bring all of the skills together, creating an image which is layered and edited. I was happy with using the tools and so was able to comfortable complete the task.
