From Script To Screen: Comparing Main Characters

I now want to compare each of the characters from Shutter Island, Joker and Fight club in order to see how they are each written.

Shutter Island

Set: 1950s

Name: Teddy Daniels (Andrew Laeddis)

Mental Disorder(s)

Delusional Disorder - Creates a fake persona to escape the truth about his life.believes that patient has escaped (Rachel Solando) and it is his job to find her.

Also believes Andrew Laeddis is on the loose, the man who killed his wife.

He acts as if a tape is being played over and over

Reason For Disorder(s)

Brought on from guilt of killing soldiers in war as well as the death of his children and murder of his wife. Wife is bipolar. She set the apartment on fire and then drowned her children. Andrew kills her because of this. He feels guilty as he ignored his wife and did not seek professional help for her, which resulted in the death of his children.

Joker (2019)

Set: 1981

Name: Arthur Fleck

Mental Disorder(s)

Depression, PTSD, social anxiety, schizophrenia, narcissism, unresolved identity disorder, Pseudobulbar affect

Pseudobulbar affect prevents him the inability to stop laughing when put in uncomfortable situations

Believes to have an entire relationship with his neighbour in which he has never formally met. Also fantasises about people enjoying his comedy routines (clapping can be heard out of sink). Scenes of him watching other people's routines are also fake which can be seen from him laughing out of time with the crowd. He also fantasises about going on the Murray Franklin show and being important to the host.

There of shots of him locked away in presumable Arkham state hospital and can even be seen escaping the hospital by the end.

Reason For Disorder(s)

He was adopted and abused by his mother and boyfriend. He was abandoned, malnourished, beaten and was found chained to a radiator. The brain damage received gave him most of his disorders and the rest are a result of PTSD

Fight Club (1999)

Set: 1999

Name: The Narrator (Tyler Durden)

Mental Disorder(s)

Dissociative Identity Disorder, Insomnia, Depression

Believes that Tyler and himself are different people, sometimes he is himself, sometimes he watches Tyler and sometime he is Tyler.

His life is miserable as he cannot sleep, causing him to have night jobs where he makes soap.

Reason For Disorder(s)

The Narrator was looking for a way to change his life. He couldn't do it on his own. So he created Tyler. A version of himself he longed to be. Tyler is handsome, charismatic, he knows what he wants and most importantly is free from the system. Everything The Narrator believes he is not.

He is depressed by his life, his job and his lack of sleep

After investigating each of these characters I now have a stronger idea of how to create a character of my own.
