From Script To Screen: Investigating The 3 Objects.

I have previously looked at different types of magicians, I now want to look at Hospitals and briefcases in more detail. This is so I don't limit my understanding of the two based on what immediately pops up in my mind. I can use the knowledge gained to add additional information to my story and influence which direction it takes.

Below I have listed the many different types of hospitals

Acute Care Hospital - This is the basic hospital which takes care of acute injury and illnesses. This is the type of hospital which immediately comes to mind.

Acute hospitals are usually very large as they are open to the public. Their is 24 hour care meaning its always very active and full of people. Because of the range of different reasons to go to a hospital, its environment has to be kept very clean. This means constant cleaning and sterilization to ensure its as safe a place as possible. The colour scheme is very plain, with the walls almost always being white. After doing some research I found that this is done to help visually impaired patients as it ensures the maximum amount of contrast.

Vets - A type of hospital which treats animals. The hospital in my story doesn't have to necessarily be for my character. Maybe the magicians rabbit is ill and needs to be taken to the vets.

The vets is a very clean environment as it is vital to preserve its bacteria from spreading between animals with health issues. There are an array of animals which can be treated at the vets, each with their different coats of fur, meaning the environment can become very hairy very quickly. The floors are regularly cleaned to prevent any build up. They also feature artwork of many different animals on the walls to offer a kind of support to those waiting on their animal. Its comforting to see a healthy animal when you are waiting on the results of your own pet and offers a ray of hope that your animal will be the happy like the ones in the pictures. The vets also feature bright colours to feel inviting to those who are concerned for their animals well being.

Psychiatric Hospital - Helps those with mental and emotional disorders. This type of hospital could be used in my story to give a background to my character. Maybe their a magician who suffers from a mental illness who is trying to make it in a harsh society.

I think its interesting to consider what most people's perception of a mental hospital is from the inside. I have gathered two different interior shots and one exterior to compare the two ideas. Most see it as a negative place where negative situations occur between the patient and doctors, whether it be torture or murder or something along those line. This is mainly due to how the media portrays mental institutions as well as there being reports of these types of incidence occurring in the past when mental disorders were not understood as well as today. In reality they are a much more inviting environment as it is meant to be a safe space for those with the disorders to feel safe and to get the help they need. Bright colours are usually used and the hallways are clear to prevent any sort of violent situation from occurring.

These two very different environments can create two very different stories. Are the patients being mistreated or is it a safe space for them. I need to consider this when picking the type of hospital.

Addiction/Substance abuse - Treats those with an addiction. The magician maybe suffers from a crippling anxiety and can only perform when on a drug. They could be sent to rehab to help with this addiction.

Rehab is a very expensive hospital for those with addiction to go to. This is mainly due to its grand design and high end facilities. The patients are treated very well, with an array of different distractions available to keep their mind off their addiction.

The next to hospital are more of the same and so do not need images to investigate them further.

Long-Term Care - Provides help to those with long term illnesses who need additional support. The magician could be there to cheer up those with life ending diseases and help them escape from their reality.

Teaching Hospital - A place for those who wish to train in a realistic environment. Im not completely sure how the magician fits into this sort of environment, however its a good idea for an environment which will help the characters develop their skills.

Briefcase

In order to understand how an object such as a briefcase is implemented into a story, I want to watch films which include items which drive the plot. Off the top of my head I can think of Pulpfiction and .... These two films are centred directly round the object in question, a briefcase. I could also look at random films and try to break them down into three components, the object, setting and character.
