Fantastic Voyage: Analysing A BBC Bitesize Animation
Now that I have identified the age range and understand the requirements needed to educate, I now want to investigate how educational resources make learning fun. A massive platform which I personally used when studying in school was BBC Bitesize. I went on their website and typed in evolution. I found a 2D animation about adaptation, aimed at KS2. I decided to analyse this as it is still relevant.
Below are the notes I made
The animation explained to the viewer how adaptation effects animals in the wild, with the video only being 1 minuet long.
The animation contains a smiley character who seems approachable. He is right up close to the camera and is actively engaging with the audience through his movement and eye contact.
The art style is simple, making it easy to digest what is going on.
The character is well spoken yet has a funny accent to appear unique and interesting. He emphasises his words in a way to make them sound fun and speaks in a soft tone to comfort the young audience.
The animation changes rapidly in order to maintain the viewers interest. It also has loud noises and puts the character in danger a lot to keep the audience on edge.
The video is short and covers the topic well. Its short time makes it easy to watch again
The video contains a lot of humour to make the learning part more fun. A lot of the humour is visual to help attention and its relevant to the subject the character is talking about, helping to reinforce the information visually.
The video also comes with the information in text form to refresh your memory. The font is clear as well as the language used.
Finally their is a simple quiz at the end which tests your knowledge. You are praised for getting the question right and also given the answer in a sentence to ensure you know why you are right.
I really like how active the character is not only with the audience but with his environment as well. For most of the animation his face covers nearly half the screen, while the other half and background displays the information he is talking about in a visual form. I like this sort of animation which is engaging to watch, no matter how old you are. The quick pace maintains your attention and the simple art style is easy to look at.
I now want to look into art styles of other BBC Bitesize animation to see how they differ.
