Minor Project: Creating Compositions For Animation Traditional Vs Technology
After learning about the importance of composition, I wanted to go back through my storyboard and recreate the shots in a way which followed the rules of composition.
I watched loads of animated fight scenes in order to see how composition is used between the characters. Below are some of my favourites which I referenced for my own compositions.
This is the first shot I created after researching composition and depicts the two characters meeting for the first time. Just like how we have been doing in class, I decided to pick a keyframe for my first composition. This is a very important moment within the animation as it is before the action between the two characters begins.
The idea of this shot is that it is a face off between two characters who have been brought up to be enemies by their environment. Both sides are highly trained and believe their method is the only one which can work. The shot is framed around the main character as he looks off to the other side where his enemy is standing. The cyberpunk character is placed in a way to that he is perfectly framed between the posts of the bridge so that he is the clear focus. The mountains also are placed in a way so that they create a shape which points towards the character as well as reveal the world of the cyberpunk behind the character. This hints the to the audience where the cyberpunk character has come from as well as using the light of the city to frame the character in the shot, as if its pointing to him. I like how the natural environment is broken by the unnatural light of the cyberpunk world, much like how the cyberpunk character has come to break the peace between the two worlds. I also implemented a stone path which created leading lines towards the character and mountains, rocks and trees, to block any unnecessary detail which could distract the viewer from the focus. Finally by making the Samurai face towards the target, it allows the audience to get inside of the characters head and understand what he might be thinking.
I continued this way of thinking for the following shots, making sure to reference my research on composition. I looked through my storyboard and depicted scenes I thought were the most relevant within the story and asked myself how can I emphasis this. I continued using the mountains from Overwatch in order to see if I liked what they looked like within the environment, as well as to speed the process up. (Click on images to zoom in)
