Minor Project: Fight Scene Research + References

 Before starting the animatic storyboard, I watched loads of fight scenes now focusing on choreorgrapby and composition. I did this because of what I previously learnt in the fight scene tutorial;

Montald says that they watch a lot of action sequences and just take notes for what they want to happen in their own work. Then decide which shots you want to take from that. Start with the part which inspires you the most as it will motivate you to continue if that part looks good.

I focused on anime fight scenes as I want there to be elements of this in my animation.

Saitama vs Genos Fight | One Punch Man (60FPS)

Shimazaki Fight - Mob Psycho

Mob vs Koyama Full Fight (60fps)

One Piece - Zoro vs Mihawk (remastered)

As the animation did not just contain fighting but also a running sequence, I also looked into running animations. I found two really useful videos which showed how different animation studios depict their characters running. It was interesting to see how each character moved in their own way as well as how the art style with used to help get across the idea of movement.

Walking 歩く Sakuga MAD

Below are the two most useful fight sequences I found to reference (top from Samurai Champloo, bottom from The Sword Of Strangers). The two have a very traditional Japanese feel to them and feature Japanese style of fighting. I found the camera work and choreography to be in the style in which I wanted for my own animation. They also proved to be the most useful fight scenes as its between two characters who are both using swords, no magic or guns.

The Samurai Champloo fight scene was useful to watch as it depicted two character fighting with very different levels of experiences. This is something I want to convey within my fight as although both characters are very skilled fighters, the cyberpunk character is superior due to the upgrades to its body. This will create a power difference between the two characters.

The Sword Of Strangers had the best choreography, However what made it the best was the way in which the camera was utilize to show off the choreography for the entire fight. The camera is constantly shifting angles in order to give the best shot of the characters and will often feature multiple camera angles for a single move. This helped to match the pace of the fight and show of the skill of the fighters.

Below are screenshots of my favourite shots which I want to recreate for my own animation. I will then be able to stich together the best parts in order to make my animation the best it can be. I am not the best at drawing and so it will make it easier depicting the action if I have a reference. I can then get on which recreating the shots in 3D.

I really like how the shot (below) shows the character running away, as the camera slowly pans behind them. I thought I could use this shot as the Samurai slowly approaches the palace.

I thought I could use this shot (below) to show the cyberpunk character making his way closer to the bridge and eventually jumping over it. I really like how the camera shift to the side, which reveals the quick movement of the character by having the ground move quickly below their feet.

I will now begin the storyboard which will be used to create the revised animatic.
