Toolkit 2 Final Submission: Links To All Work + Reflection
Toolkit 2 Reflection
Jetpack Jones was an interesting experience. One of the main reasons I joined the course was to learn how to create a character and then have the ability to fully model, rig and eventually animate them. Jetpack Jones gave me the ability to learn and apply these skills, and I felt this more engaging than the previous toolkit. I enjoyed modelling the characters head the most as it was the most rewarding as I had taken a drawing and made it into 3D. Although not perfect I feel my model still resembles that of the character. I appreciated the in-depth process of painting skin weights, something I was unsure about and struggled with in my previous projects. The videos did a good job of simplifying and explaining the process. However at the same time I felt that the whole process could have been made more interesting rather than sitting alone at a computer watching videos. I understand that their isn't much more you can do apart from learn this way but by making the character this way, I found myself counting down the seconds for the video to end rather than enjoying the process. This was due to me wanting to make sure I got the videos done in time for the deadline. This made the experience feel like more of chore and I will need to re-watch certain parts in order to ensure that I retain the information learnt.
With that being said I loved the feeling of satisfaction from completing a video and reflecting upon what I had learnt. I can now use the skills learnt in toolkit 2 in order to complete the practical side of minor. I feel I am now a step closer to achieving what I have set out to do for the premise project.
I completed as much of the character as I could, opting to do the facial rigging over the texturing as it is a completely new skill which seemed more important to learn going into the 3rd year. Any left over tutorials I will complete in my own time over the summer in order to make sure I have the skills to complete my minor and major project.
Below is a link which shows the screenshots and notes I took throughout the whole process of modelling Jetpack Jones.

Reflection
I feel my life drawing this year was a lot stronger than previous years, even though their is a lot of room for improvement. I really tried to change the way I draw, instead of looking and then drawing I instead tried draw whilst observing. At first this idea is uncomfortable as you want the drawing to look good, however by spending less time looking at the object, your mind puts in the errors it thinks the drawing needs. This results in drawings which are out of proportion and wrong. One way of combatting this problem is by not drawing the outline of the model. Instead you should focus on individual lines which represent light and shadow and focus on how this interact with the model. At first I struggled with this idea but as the weeks progressed felt much more comfortable. Overall I feel that by doing life drawing it has given me a different perspective of the drawing process and I feel this improvement has been seen throughout my projects.
